It is often important to avoid encounters because they can be so dangerous, but scouting makes it too frustrating, so I usually save scum. It also slows the caravan, as it will use about a third of its movement points per day (making a profit even harder due to supply costs) to scout every space. Scouting hugely slows the gameplay and is a time sink for the player. Even with more mild combat encounters like roaming undead and Jakhra packs, 2-3 of them can turn a journey into a loss. These sorts of powerful bandit ambushes or rogue necromancers aren't that rare, and encounters seem to "level up" with the caravan. Another I fought them and they fled after killing a load of my men and stealing a pack beast, another they killed the whole caravan. Another I tried fleeing and they captured all three of my pack beasts. Pacifying them meant handing over ~50 bross. I did some test runs against bandits: with similar conditions (they were about equal to ~10% stronger), all went badly. However, combat can easily be devastating. I really like finding Jakhra packs and (at the cost of some troops) collecting enough food to last a week. Predict what the enemy wants, minimise losses. I like that you have three rounds to decide how it plays out - too defensive and the opponent can flee so you miss loot, too offensive and you're likely to take unnecessary losses. I can't say I really understand the mechanics, but I appreciate that if you use defensive tactics you tend to take fewer casualties, if you use offensive tactics you inflict more casualties (and occasionally the RNG is very unkind).
